MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SITTING AT GREYMOUTH.

A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Greymouth, this morning, Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M., presiding. Wong Kew, Chinese laundryman, Albert Street, was charged that, on May 20, at Greymouth, he was found in the possession of prepared pP I^ 11 and an opium pipe, contrary to the provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1927. Mr. AV. D. Taylor appeared for accused and pleaded guilty. Senior Detective H. E. Knight stated that on April 6 an addressed envelope which had left Christchurch the previous day came'into the possession of the police. It contained doubles charts, to which prepared opium was attached. It was retained and a watch kept for correspondence of a doubtful nature. On May 20, as a postman delivered a letter to accused, witness and Detective Davis paid a. visit. The letter contained two slabs of prepared opium. Accused had nothing to say. A search revealed an opium pipe, which accused said nad been left some years previously. However,* the pipe showed signs of having been made more recently. Accused maintained the laundry by himself and was not in a good state of health. Nothing was known against him. Mr. Taylor submitted there was no question of accused supplying opium or keeping an opium den. The quantities were small and obviously for his own use. f Accused was convicted and lined £25 with 10/- costs on each charge, this being the minimum amount. Appearing on remand, Sydney Arthur Grey, labourer, aged 22, who had been arrested at Stockton, pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to present himself at Buckle Street Barracks, Wellington on August 17, 1942, for service with the Armed Forces as required under the National Service Emergency Regulations. Senior-Sergeant G. H. L. Hole applied for a remand to Wellington, which was granted. A fine of 10/- with 18/6 costs, was nflicted on a man found on the premises of the Helvetia Hotel, Goldsborough.
