REEFTON NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, February Vi. It is expected to resume coal production al Burke’s Creek Colliery during next week. The mine, which is the largest producing unit in the Reefton Held, has been stopped as a coal producer since February 8, when it was discovered that there was overheating in the old workings of the mine, making the withdrawal of the men from the working faces a necessity. Stoppings to seal off the danger area are now almost finished. The employees have since the cessation of production been engaged in this work. Some 60 men.were affected by the trouble. The daily output of the mine is considerable. 'Mr. H. Evans has been visiting Reefton, having been appointed geologist to the oil boring plant at No Town. He was accompanied by Mrs. Evans. APPEAL BOARD ■The Armed Forces Appeal Board heard following appeals: Blackwater Mines Ltd., for D. McPherson and E. C. Meaclem .truckers, exemption from Territorial training in camp.— Granted. Burkes Creek Collieries, for D. D. Coxall (miner) and C. Carter (trucker), for release'from camp.— Adjourned sine die for Coxall; second appeal held over. Terrace Coal Mine, for leave to adopt appeal for A. H. Thompson (miner). —Granted, and adjourned sine die. Comet Mining Party, for C. J. Taylor, miner.—-Held over. Waitahu Co-operative Mining Party, leave to adopt appeal for C. Bennett, miner.—Granted and adjourned sine die. On review: W. J. August, baker; W. Hunt, grocer (personal appeals), Harold Bros, and Reefton Fire Brigade for A. G. Reid, storeman; Wills Ltd., for W. Pennington, storekeeper; District Public Trustee, for E. T. Baird, store manager.—All adjourned sine die. Slab Hut Creek Gold Dredging Co., leave to adopt appeal for C. A. Cullen, electrician.—Granted, and adjourned sine die; for W. G. Chandler and A. Andrews, contractors. —Adjourned sine die with exemption from camp training. Reefton Electric Light Co., for R. A. Black, electrician; Mrs E. Bannan, for R. E. Bannan, bushman. —Both adjourned sine die. R. Yellowlees, for IVI. T. Waddell, miner; E. R. Bradley, timber contractor (personal appeal).—Both adjourned and granted exemption from camp.
