’ Mr. R. Kiely, of Greymouth, to-day ? took over the" license of the Roa Ho- : tel from Mr. H. Jamieson. ’ A start was made to-day by the 1 District Manpower Office at Grey- ■ mouth on the task of interviewing die ! women who have enrolled in the 3140 year group for work of national importance. Only single women m this group are being called tor interview in the meantime. So far 222 re- ’ gistrations have been received at Greymouth. A record has been achieved by the two sons of Mr. and Mrs. H. Poananga, of Ruatoria, East Coast, in being the first Maoris to be accepted for training at Duntroon Military College. The elder of the two boys, Bruce, was accepted last year and was the first of his race to go to Duntroon, while the younger boy, Brian, whose name appears in the 1944 list, makes the second Maori to secure that honour. Brian received his early education at the Hiruharama Native School and later at the Palmerston North High School, where he passed the University entrance examination. He was heavyweight school boxing champion and senior athletic champion for field events. He also held the Royal LifeSaving Society’s bronze medal and bar. Extract from a Greymouth boy’s letter home. Somewhere in the Pacific: “ . . . some of the boys have just finished doing their washing and there is a fair amount of chaff dying round about the varying degrees ol whiteness.
