MINE EXPLOSION

TWO MEN INJURED

INVERCARGILL, January 23

When an explosion occurred behind a sealed area in . the Birchwood coal mine at Oh’ai early this morning, it blew out about five stoppings. Two men who were on inspection duties suffered extensive burns. They were brought to the Southland Hospital and their condition to-night was reported to be serious but improving. The men were:—

Frederick Edwards, aged 52, married, extensive burns to face, arms, shoulders, and head. James Kitto, aged 39, married, similar injuries. The mine has been sealed for 48 hours. It is estimated that the loss of output as a result of the mishap will be about 300 tons.
