Rev. Brother Herbert, who was Director of the Marist Brothers’ School in Greymouth about 20 years ago, is visiting Greymouth.
Mr G. Durry, Passenger Foreman, who has been on extended sick leave, resumed duty at the Greymouth Railway Station to-day.
Mr and Mrs F. Rowe, Peel Street, Cobden, have received advice that their son, Private Leslie James Rowe, who was previously reported missing, is now safe.
Reuter’s Algiers correspondent reports that Air-Marshal Sir John Slessor has arrived in North Africa to take his post as Air Commander of the Mediterranean Theatre.
Mr and Mrs J. D- Perrin, Turamaha Street, have received advice that their son, Trooper J. A. Perrin, who was previously reported missing, is now believed to be a prisoner of war.

The death occurred yesterday at Ahaura of Mr. Hugh Patrick Kennedy, at native of Hokitika, aged 74 years. Deceased lived practically all his life in the Ahaura district, where he was engaged in farming. He was single and is survived by one brother, Mr, John Kennedy (Wellington), and three sisters, Mesdames J. Higgins (Greymouth), W. Clayton (Ahaura) and M. Malone (Christchurch). The Interment will take place privately at Greymouth tomorrow.
Mr E. E. James, Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department, Christchurch, who has been appointed Resident Electrical Engineer at Greymouth, in succession to Mr A. E. Davenport, who will leave shortly to take up the position of District Electrical Engineer at Auckland, is paying a preliminary visit to Greymouth. At a sitting of the Christchurch Manpower Appeal Committee, last evening, Mr Davenport, in thanking the Committee for its courtesies, introduced Mr James. The Chairman, Mr K. G. Archer, thanked Mr Davenport for the manner in which he had presented cases for its consideration.

The death occurred on Thursday on active service of LieutenantColonel J. H. H. Wood, N.Z.M.C., after a short illness, states the N.Z.E.F. Official News Service in a message from the South Pacific. LieutenantColonel Wood was 45 years of age. At the time of his death he was commanding the Second New Zealand Convalescent Depot in New Caledonia. Lieutenant-Colonel Wood graduated from Otago University. He was in general practice at Remuera before the war and was also in charge of the Physio-Therapy Department at the Auckland Hospital. He was a territorial medical officer for fourteen years, finally commanding the First Field Ambulance in New Zealand. He was Senior Medical Officer at a large mobilisation camp, then in January, 1942, opened the Rotorua Remedial Training Camp, where many men from the Middle East were fully restored to health. Since the depot opened in New Caledonia about six months ago many • sick and wounded New Zealand soldiers have had the benefit of his enthusiasm and knowledge. He is survived by his widow and three children. A short, simple ceremony was conducted at a military cemetery on Friday. The body was laid to rest with military honours in the presence of representatives of all units. The pall-bearers were Brigadier W. W. Dove, Brigadier J. M. Twhigg Colonel E ,G. Sayers, Major N. J. Hawkins, Captain W. N. Mackie and Lieutenant G. M. Hobson.
