Rev. S. Francis, of Christchurch, is visiting Moana.

Mr. S. H. Sofield will return from Christchurch, this evening.

Mr. G. G. M. Mitchell will return, his evening, from Auckland.

Mr. L. Arnold left, to-day, on reurn to Christchurch.

Mr. W. T. N. Bond has been appointed Patrol Officer to the West Coast branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association.

Mrs. D. McPherson and Miss R. Picken who were on holiday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Picken of Cobden, returned to Wellington today.

Mrs. E. L. Hearn, of South Beach, has received advice that her son, Private Charles Hearn, who has been a prisoner of war in Italy, has been transferred to Germany.

Mr. O’Brien, Minister of Marine, expects to return to Wellington on Tuesday morning. He spent to-day at Hokitika, where he viewed the harbour works with Mr. F. W. Furkert. It will not be possible for him to travel to Westport during his present visit to the Coast.

A Sydney cablegram stated that Lieut.-General Sir John Lavarack has been appointed head of the Australian Military Mission in Washington, in succession to Lieut--General V. A. Sturdee, who will return to Australia to take up a high army appointment.

Mr. J. M. A. Hott, of Wellington, has been elected one of the five directors for the outside world of Rotary International. Mr. Hott, was president of the Wellington Rotary Club in 192930, and District Governor for New Zealand and Fiji in 1934. Acceptance of this position will necessitate his leaving for the United States in the near future.—P.A.

The Union Steam Ship Company announces the following staff appointments: Mr. A. N. Leslie, chief assistant to the management, and Mr. H. Dobie, branch manager, head office; Mr. P. L. Hodge, branch manager, Invercargill, to be branch manager, Christchurch; Mr. L. L. Derbridge, submanager, Lyttelton, to be branch manager, Invercargill; Mr. H. G. Edwards, chief clerk, Napier, to be sub-mah-ager, Lyttelton. Mr. Edwards is a native of Greymouth, and joined the Company’s service at Napier.

The death occurred at Hamilton, yesterday, after a lengthy illness, of Miss Doreen Thomson, aged 26 years. Deceased, who was a native of Greymouth, was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Shakespeare Street, Greymouth. She was a nurse by profession and after receiving her training at Greymouth nursed at the Napier, Waipawa and Waikao Hospitals. She is survived by her parents, one sister, Mrs W. Manning (Greymouth) and one brother, John (N.Z.E.F., Middle East). The funeral will take place at Greymouth.

Rev. Arthur Ashcroft, whose death occurred recently at Palmerston North, was born in 1869 in Lancashire, England, and came with his parents to New Zealand in 1884. In 1890, he was accepted by the Methodist Church as a home missionary. He held church appointments at Waitara, Paparoa (North Auckland), Woodend, Tai Tapu, Christchurch, Greymouth, Nelson, Palmerston North, Thames, Auckland, Oamaru, and Oxford. He married Miss Mary Missen at Dannevirke in 1900. For nearly 20 years, Mr. Ashcroft held various offices in the General Conference. He was secretary from 1920 until 1924, when he was appointed president. He is survived by his widow, one son, and two daughters.
