Pastor W. S. Lowe, a former minister of the Church of Christ at Greymouth, is visiting Greymouth.

Miss A. Shannon left, this morning, for Lincoln, where she has accepted a position on the staff of the Wheat Research Institute.

Mr. Philip J. Thorne, Clerk of the Wider Quaker Fellowship, left on return to Christchurch, this morning.

The death has occurred at Auckland of Mr Norman Heath, Consul for Latvia, probably one of the best known travellers in the Dominion. — P.A.

Rev. H. G. Goring, President of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, will arrive from Christchurch, this evening, to spend the week-end in Greymouth.

The Tokio radio announced that Madame Suzanne Decoux, wife of the Governor-Generalof Indo-China, was killed in an automobile accident at Saigon.

Mr. C. J. King, formerly police sergeant at Hokitika, who is leaving to reside in Napier, was farewelled, this week, by members of the Hokitika Bowling Club, and presented with a smokers’ stand. «

Captains Lamond and Gray, of the Salvation Army, have received orders to farewell from Greymouth, and will be leaving for Waimate shortly. Captain and Mrs. Ojala, of Woodville, have been appointed to succeed them.

Private J. Smith, who recently returned to the Dominion with repatriated personnel after being a prisoner of war in Italy, arrived in Greymouth yesterday afternoon, being met at the railway station by members of the Grey Patriotic Committee and others.

The death took place at Reefton, yesterday, of Mr. Patrick Carr, aged 51. A native of England, he came to the Dominion in his youth and had resided at Reef ton for 30 years. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. S. Barkle and Mrs. R. McLean, of Reefton. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon.

Mr. W. C. Hyde, horticulturist of the Department of Agriculture in Wellington, has retired after 19 years’ service. The author of many pamphlets on horticulture, Mr. Hyde was associated with the former director of horticulture, Mr. J. A. Campbell, in work which led to the establishment of the tobacco-grow-ing industry in New Zealand.

Dr. James Harper Reid, one of the oldest, medical practitioners in Wanganui, died recently in his seventyfifth year. He was born in New Zealand, was at the Otago Boys’ High School, and graduated from the medical school of the Otago University. His first years in practice were spent on the West Coast, and later he travelled extensively in England and on the Continent.*
