POST OFFICE TOWER

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—The Cabinet’s decision to dismantle the tower so as to remove the hazard arising from earthquakes seems to he wise. It might be pointed out that the quake previous to the one in 1929 occurred about lo years before. Assuming that . another ’quake xniaht occur again this would be expected about 1945. I notice the p. and T. Department intends to hand the clock and chimes over to the Borough Council as the sum of LuOO was subscribed by the ratepayers. What is the Council going to do with tills unexpected gift? They might consider erecting a special museum in house the white elephant and make a charge for admittance to view the works'. The business area is too congested, even with the everlasting ’quake hazard, to think oi erecting a suitable building' to hold the gift horse in a suitable position. Consideration might be given to the matter of erecting a tower such, as Hokitika possesses, say in the vicinity of the Opera House in Tainui Street or in the vacant space. Also, the Department could be approached with the object of their placing a smaller clock somewhere on the Tainui Street side of their building. Even if a new Town Hall, was built in -future years it might not be advisable to erect the clock and chimes there. This is an occasion when business people and the public will have an opportunity of bringing forward suggestions." I am, etc., DUBIOUS RATEPAYER.
