RAILWAYMEN’S CONDITIONS

TRIBUNAL TO INVESTIGATE.

AUCKLAND, December 14. The Government having agreed to set up a tribunal to investigate wages and conditions of the railway service, representatives of Auckland district railway organisations have decided in the meantime to defer action regarding their claims for better wages and conditions. A conference of representatives oi the four organisations of railway servants was held last night, when Mr. W. J. Tegs, National President of the Railway "Tradesmen’s Association, attended, and presented reports.;

IFollowing these, the position was fully discussed by the conference, which expressed dissatisfaction with the prolonged negotiations. The following resolution was carried by the meeting: “In view of the fact that the Government proposes to set up a Htribunal to investigate the whole of /the conditions and wages in the railJway service, this conference defers ,j action until further information is I received from the national executive.” ' It' was further decided that all branches throughout New Zealand should be advised that the Government offer to set up a tribunal should be accepted, providing that the personnel be elected from the rank and file, and that the proposed tribunal should be set up and acting in Janu- ; ary.
