REEFTON NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

REEFTON, Dec. 11. The monthly meeting of the Council of Reefton School of Mines was held on Thursday, Mr. J. B. Auld presiding. He reported that an inspection had been made of the school building by the Public Works Department to report on the need for painting and renovation. During a visit to Wellington, he had interviewed the Under Secretary, Mines Department, in support of the application to have this work carried out.

The Director, Mr. W. J. Bolitho, reported that classes for the year had ended. During the month 17 students from the school sat for underviewers and deputies examinations. The assay position continues to be satisfactory; 20 were carried out for the month as follows: Bullion assays 15, quartz samples 5, coal dust samples 1. It was resolved that the school close for two weeks at Christmas, Mr. J. B. I Auld to carry out the assay work during the director’s absence on holiday. The provision of an anomometer for the school laboratory was discussed. A member reported an offer made by District Inspectors of Mines of lecture to students on coal mining subjects. It was decided that the offer be made use of in the year. The Bishop of Nelson, Right Rev. P. W. Stephenson, visited Reefton, on Thursday and in the evening conducted a confirmation service in St. Stephens Church. Twenty candidates were presented for confirmation, and the Bishop who preached, used as his theme “Ye are not your own, but are bought, with a price.” A young man had a narrow escape from drowning in the Inangahua River on Tuesday night. Unable to swim well he got into a deep hole, and was in difficulties. His plight was noticed by Mr. Frank Hallaran, who with the assistance of Mr. E. Goodall was able to bring the young man to land in an exhausted condition. Further steps in arrangements for the celebration of the 70th Jubilee of Reefton Volunteer Fire Brigade have been made, and it was ‘decided to fix February 25 and 26th 1944 as the tentative dates for the celebrations. A demonstration will be held and £5O in prize money for the events has been allotted to this. A five-man reel event for firemen with over 15 years’ service is to be included on the programme. Officers of the N.Z. Fire Brigades Association and ex-brigades men from all over New* Zealand haVe been incited to attedd.
