Mr F. Lester, railways clerk, Kumara Junction, left this morning, on transfer to Fordell. He was accompanied by Mrs Lester.
Mr. W. A. Marten, formerly of the Railways Department staff, Greymouth, who is on leave.from overseas service is visiting the district.
Guests at Revingtons Hotel include Mr G. Helmky, Mr T. W. Davie, Miss E. Alexander (Dunedin); Mr and Mrs A. Connors (Christchurch).
Miss C. J. Sutherland, of Greymouth, commenced duty, to-day, on the clerical staff of the Railways Department.
Mr W. Baltrop, of Cobden, will leave next week to join the R.N.Z.A.F. He was farewelled last evening by friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Crooks, Cobden.
Mr. B. H. Patton, relief clerk, Lyttelton, will arrive in Greymouth on Saturday to replace Mr. W. F. Callery as Train Running Officer. Mr. Callery will leave for Christchurch shortly.
Passengers by this morning’s express for Christchurch included: Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Dowell, Mrs. R. R. King, Misses M. Anderson and K. Spencer, Messrs A. Beban, W. Kells, J. Anisy, W. Greenhill, E. Stratford. D. McPherson, E. W. Heenan.
One of the passengers who arrived in Auckland yesterday by Tasman Empire Airways flying-boat from Australia was Mr J. S. Menzies, a son of the Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand (Mr J. L. Menzies), who lives in Wellington. Mr J. S. Menzies is a medical student in Victoria and was called to New Zealand at very short notice to attend at the bedside of his mother, Mrs J. L. Menzies, who is reported to be seriously ill.—P.A.
The death occurred, this morning, at his residence, Stillivater, of Mr. AVilliam Feary, aged 75 years. Mr. Feary, who had been ailing for some time, was a native of Wakefield, and went to the Brunner district over 50 years ago. With his brother, he Avas for a time engaged in saAvmilling operations at Arnold Siding, and later was in the employ of the Railways Department, from which he retired nine years ago. Besides his Avife, Mr Feary is survived by two sons, William (Wellington), and Thomas (Sydney), one daughter, Mrs. Frank Adams (Stillwater), and one brother Harry (Wakefield). The funeral will take place at the Karoro Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, leaving S’ampson’s Chapel.
