WOMEN’S CHARTER (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 23. The Australian Women’s Charter, comprising about 5000 words, was adopted by the Australian Women’s Conference, which has now ended. It demands, among other things, an endowment from the Commonwealth Government to “women homemakers” of at least 30/- a week. The Chairman of the Conference, Mrs Jessie Street, described the recommendation as “epoch-making.” The Charter demands an improvement in the legal status of women, including amendments to the Married Women’s Property Act to provide tor community of interest in property acquired after marriage by either party other than by inheritance. The full Charter embodies all the resolutions passed by the Conference. ft demands that no discrimination be made- in the rights and responsibilities of men and women, as citizens, equal pay for work, and encouragement for women to take part in all phases of public life. The Conference also seeks wide representation for women at the International Peace Conference.
