MIGRATION PLANS
SYDNEY, November 20. Post-war migration to Australia will be discussed, immediately by the Federal Government at a depart.mental conference. A survey will be made of the probable rate at which new settlers could be absorbed after the war, and the Government’s lina.l policy will be based on the results of this survey. Sir Neville Pearson, a member of the British Press Delegation which has been visiting Austra--1 lia, emphasised that now was the time to open discussions with countries from which migrants were desired. Australia’s population must be heavily increased if the country were to take its rightful place in the Western Pacific. * COAL "MINES CANBERRA, November 20. Regulations have been issued empowering the Government to take over coal mines and other essential undertakings where war supplies are threatened. Managers will be provided to keep the undertakings open. It is stated officially that the decision was not made as a step towards nationalisation of industry. The regulations have been issued in the name of Mr Curtin as Minister of Defence. Mr Curtin declined to comment on the regulations.
