FIRM LOSES 168 SHIRTS

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 20.

Further lists of stolen ship-borhe merchandise have been supplied by firms to the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Some of the items are:—l6B shirts from a single parcel, 475 tablecloths and 324 table napkins, 197? yards of fabric, 167 yards of satin and other quantities of material almost as substantial. The secretary to the association (Mr. R. T. Alston) told a reporter of “The Press” yesterday that two firms had recently supplied returns of claims made for pillaged goods. Both covered the period from the beginning of September, since when such thefts appeared to have been on the increase. The 168 shirts were taken from a parcel which had been well wrapped and double-corded, and the ends of which had been sealed with gummed-paper tape, said Mr. Alston. The other firm listed its losses from goods shipped to Lyttelton since September 1, as follow:—Three pieces of fabric, 1121 yards, value £22/15/-; 475 tablecloths and 324 table napkins, £200; five pieces of fabric and two “ends,” 1381 yards, £3l; one piece of fabric and three ends, 95? yards, £l3 10/-; one roll of rayon, 49.] yards, £l4/10/-; four piece and one end ol satin, 167 yards, £3O; three rolls of cloth, 118! yards, £46/10/-; one piece (cut from a roll) of cloth, 8 yards, £2/5/-. , r .' . t , The total value of this stolen material was £405/10/-, said Mr. Alston. The cases were being reported to the New Zealand Manufacturers Federation, which would make representations to the Government.
