RUNANGA NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Since the recent meeting to organise a Community Week at Runanga, the committee formed has been active in making arrangements for the week, which will commence on Sunday, December’ 5. Community Week has been sponsored by the Extension Department and W.E.A. of Canterbury University College, as part of its work in developing adult education, and has met with the support of all local organisations, who are represented on the committee. The programme arranged includes a swimming carnival, musical ib-ms, plays, and a debate, as well as instructive talks by visiting speakers on such subjects as preparation of food, care of fabrics, homecraft, music .and education. The programme will be free, but any proceeds will be devoted to a nursery play centre for pre-school children. The Runanga Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday to deal with a gorse and scrub fire which was threatening homes on Seddon Terrace, above the railway station. It is thought that sparks from a passing train caused the outbreak, which was soon subdued.
