Mr. T. Carmichael, Signals Instructor, who has been in Greymouth on railway business, will return to Christchurch, this evening.

Guard A. R. Fricker and Guard S. G. S. McFadden, of Christchurch, who have been on relieving duty in Greymouth, will return to Christchurch to-morrow.

Advice has been received that Sergeant George London, Mayor of Petone, who was a prisoner of war in Italy, has escaped to Switzerland, where he is interned.—P.A.

Messrs S. D. Munn, Assistant Traffic Manager, R. H. Lovatt, Assistant District Engineer, and T. C. Bishop, Assistant. Locomotive Engineer, Christchurch, are visiting Greymouth on railway business.

A motion of condolence was passed with the relations of the late Mr A. M. Carroll at a meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, last evening. Mr Carroil was a member of the Council for seven years.

Several police promotions were gazetted last evening. They are SubInspectors G. H. Lambert and S. G. Hall to be inspectors, and Senior-Ser-geants J. Mclntyre and P. C. Felton to be sub-inspectors.—P.A.

Royal New Zealand Air Force promotions gazetted last evening include: Flight Lieutenant R. J. Grant, D.F.C., D.F.M., to be squadron leader (temporary). Flight Lieutenant J. R. Hutcheson, D.F.C., to be acting-squadron leader.—P.A.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser), who entered Lewisham Hospital on October 28, and who underwent an operation for an internal abscess, returned to his home at Northland yesterday. The Deputy-Prime Minister (Mr. Nash) said last night that after a neriod for rest and recuperation Mr. Fraser would resume his official duties.—P.A.

McGrath (Invercargill).

The death occurred yesterday at Greymouth, after a lengthy illness, of Mr. Andrew Quinlan, a native of Greymouth, aged 64 years. Deceased was a painter by trade and was at one time in the employ of Griffen and Smith Ltd. He served in the Boer War. Deceased is survived by a brother, Mr. John Quinlan (Greymouth). The funeral will take place to-morrow morning, following Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church.

The death occurred in the Westland Hospital, on 'Wednesday afternoon, of Miss Andrewmina M. Cumming, of Blomfield, Kokatahi Road, nt the age of 75 years. A native of Kanieri, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Cumming, and since the death of her parents had resided at Blomfield. She took a keen interest in the Presbyterian Church, especially at Kokatahi. Miss Cumming is survived by five sisters, Mrs. R. A. Harcourt (Christchurch), Mrs. T. Staines (Hokitika). Mrs. R. Beck (Westport), and Misses Jane and Marion Cumming (Kokatahi Road), also two brothers, William (Kanieri.) and Gavin (Australia). The funeral took place this morning.
