STATE AND GIRLS
[TO THE EDITOR.] Six’, —Your second correspondent signed A. M. Ross 1914-1918 is also against young women being directed by the Manpower Department in the Emergency Regulations.’ Mr Ross assumes that I am not a family man and so incapable of making a just comment on the' matter. I might inform your correspondent that his assumption is at fault, I have a married daughter whose husband returned invalided from overseas service, and my eldest sen has been absent on home and overseas service for a period of nearly three years. I am independent in political and other matters. However, I think the Regulations should be upheld in the interests of our State. Young women who are found to be medically fit and suitable for employment, in essential avenues -should not mind being directed. They will not have any cause for regret in futuie vears and will be pleased that they have fulfilled their duties during a period of crisis. A great number have enlisted for overseas service with the soldiers and other services so surely young women who have not thought of assisting their country will now realise their position and allow themselves to be directed to suitable home front employment. In regard to Mr Ross’s comment 011 ie attitude of certain Ministers of the Crown in this war, in comparison with the period of 1914-1918, that matter is easily explainable and Mr Ross should be aware of the circumstances. Wise men and women often change their minds in the course of time, and the State benefits in the process. Let unity prevail. Unreasonable complaints hinder the fight for liberty by our Empire.—l am, etc., “BE SENSIBLE.” [“Quo Vadis” may reply, if desired, otherwise, this correspondence is ended.—Ed., “Star.”]
