HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING
HOKITIKA, October 20.
The Hokitika Borough Council met yesterday. The Mayor'’ (Mr A. R. Elcock) presided over the following members:—Crs. W. H. Stopforth, E. W. Heenan, L. S; Ross. K. Aitken, G. Heinz, T. W. Duff, C. Caliari, and D. P. Stuart. The financial statement showed receipts £2021/0/9, expenditure £lBOl/16/8. Accounts amounting to £1527/11/6 were passed for payment.
The foreman’s report was approved. The sexton reported 10 interments for September. It was decided to open a dump on the river bank at Gibson’s Quay between Brittan Street and Bealey Street. This would serve as river protection. The Town Clerk was granted annual leave, to be taken when convenient, the assistant clerk, Mr 11. Cooper to act as Town Clerk and Treasurer during Mr Coles’ absence. The matter of obtaining a trailer for the Council lorry was referred to Cr. Caliari and the foreman, with power to act.
Abattoirs report.—Stock slaughtered for the month of September amounted to 42 cows, 14 heifers, 46 bullocks, 4 sheep, 1 lamb, 9 pigs. 3 calves. Condemned: 1 cow, 1 bullock. Fees collected for month amounted to £79/14/8. Fees for corresponding month last year amounted to £B9 13/2. W. IT. Shannon asked that attention be given to the Lower Sewell Street drain.—Works Committee to report. The Hokitika Businessmen’s Association advised that a joint committee of members of the Council and the Businessmen’s Association made the following recommendations in respect of the numbering .of houses in the borough:—(l) That in view of the shortage of suitable metal and the difficulty of procuring a license to have cast iron numbers plated, the numbers of houses be stencilled on the gate-posts with paint by a person or persons employed by the Council.—Adopted, Borough to pay the cost of stencilling.
