LEAGUE FOOTBALL

BLACKBALL 27, NGAHERE 7 In the final League match of the season Blackball seniors defeated Ngahere by 27 points to seven at Wingham Park yesterday afternoon, thus winning the Knock-out competition. The weather was perfect but the ground was soft. Blackball were faced with tough opposition but the combination and thrust which has built up such a fine record for them this season triumphed over the stern defence and more rugged tactics of Ngahere. The teams were:— Blackball: Nuttall; Jamieson, W. Mountford, O’Donnell; C. Mountford, McNaughton; Ord; Williams, Reynolds, Aynsley, Baillie, Kirk, P. Mountford.

Ngahere: Cooper; Dowell, A. Gibson, J. Gibson, Clark, Reo; Smith; Knight, Elmers, F. Gibson, Dunn, McClure, Korosky. Blackball led by 12 points to four at half time. Ngahere took an early lead of four points, two goals from penalties being kicked by Clark, the first for offside play and the second for shepherding. Blackball’s first try came from a combined movement by C. and W. Mountford, the latter completing the effort with a run of 50 yards to score in the corner. Baillie missed the kick. Then Ord, McNaughton, C. Mountford, W. Mountford and O’Donnell combined ,in an excellent movement which saw O’Donnell score in the corner, but Baillie again failed with the kick. Kirk scored for Blackball under the posts, but Baillie failed to add the extras and then before the interval Ord scored a try in the corner. Baillie again failed to convert. The half-time score was: Blackball 12, Ngahere 4.

Ngahere again opened the scoring in the second spell, Dowell scoring after the ball had gone along the backs. Clark failed to convert. Blackball had a good deal the better of the play in the later stages and tries were scored by W. Mountford (2), and K. Mountford. McNaughton kicked a goal from a penalty and converted two of the tries. Final score: Blackball 27, Ngahere 7. Mr. J. Griffen was referee.

The Runanga-Blackball third grade match which was to have been played at Blackball was not played as the Runanga team was unable to obtain transport.
