Speaker Not Re-elected

The General Election, on Saturday, resulted in the return of the Labour Ministry, but with a reduction of majorities in most of the constituencies retained by the party. The Nationalists won eleven seats, and lost none to Labour, except the Eastern Maori in Friday’s polling. The total vote for the Government was 412,189, National 372)303, Democratic Labour 36,004, and others 45,530. Two Ministers—Mr. Barclay (Minister of Lands, Agriculture, and Marketing) and Mr. Nordmeyer (Minister of Health), have been defeated. The Lee Party candidates were completely unsuccessful, Mr. Lee himself losing Grey Lynn to Labour. The Independents similarly failed to win support, except in the case of Mr. Atmore, who retained the Nelson seat with a reduced majority. The Speaker (Mr. Barnard) lost Napier to Labour. SOUTHERN MAORI With service votes to hand. Hon. E. T. Tirikatene increased his Jead in Southern Maori to 28 votes. „Nme were cast for Lieutenant J. P. TTkaoBarrett. Mr. To Ari Pitania received two, and Mr. V. O. M. Thomas obtained one. Mr. Tirikatene’s present majority is 507. There are about 24 postal votes and 14 absentee votes yet to be distributed. The final figures will not be known in all probability until the official count- next vveek. SERVICE VOTES ANALYSED WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. An analysis of the Services polling for the 76 European electorates discloses the following distribution of votes among the parties: Labour, 38,622-; National, 24,794; Democratic •Labour, 4,887; Democratic Labour, 4,887; all others, 3096. A total of 71,399 Service votes being cast. The Labour Party received a majority of Service votes except, in 18 electorates. These wore Riccarton, ’ Remuera, Stratford, Rangitikei, Kaipara, Egmont, Tauranga, Bay of Plenty; Waipawa, Waitomo, Christchurch North, Waikato, .Pahiatua,. Franklin, rfaur'aki, Clutha, Manawatu, and Central Otago..
