MUTTON VALUES SOAR.

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 22. Fat ewes recorded the sharpest advance for several years at the Addington sale, yesterday, when they rose (I/- to 7/- a head. Fat cattle also maintained last week’s values. Store Sheep.—Competition was keen for all classes, and prices were fully up to late rates, except lor wethers, which showed a substantial rise. Of the hoggets, 75 wethers made 25/6 and a small pen of ewes brought 31/3. A pen of 68 two-tooth open-woolled ewes in lamb to Southdown rams made 37/6, and 68 hal lbreds made 30/-. A pen of 75 twotooth hill wethers sold at 29/9, and a second draft of 69 made 25/6, while old wethers sold for 15/6. The ewes, and lambs were of medium quality only, and the best sold from 15/10 ■ to 18/- all counted. Spring Lambs. —The best price was 45/7 secured by J. Christie, Jun., Southbridge, whose draft ranged from 32/1 to that figure. Other good lambs sold from 43/1 to 44/7, medium from 32/1 to 37/7, and light from 25/7 to 31/4, Fat Sheep.—The entry dropped from 3500 last week to 2750, and with the general demand just as strong as last week, prices soared to almost record figures for Addington. Several pens of high-class wethers | and ewes were forward, mostly from southern districts, and they drew spirited competition right through | the sale, while the medium class : sheen also brought the highest prices of the season. Extra prime wethers to 64/1. Prime wethers, 55/- to 58/-. Prime medium-weight wethers, 48/1 to 52/7. Ordinary wethers, 41/- to 45/4. Extra prime ewes to 59/1. Prime ewes, 51/- to 55/-. Fat Cattle.—Outside entries were slightly less than a week ago, but they included some outstanding cattle from South Otago, South Canterbury, and the West Coast, and North Canterbury and the Peninsula were also well represented amongst the best quality. G. H. Diedrichs (Lower Kokatahi) sold 9 heifers at £2O/7/6 to £2l/17/6. Values were:—Extra prime steers, to £2B/17/6. Prime steers, £2l/10/- to £24/10/-. Prime medium-weight steers, £l7/10/- to £2l. Ordinary steers, £l3/15/- to £l6/10/-. Light streers, to £l3 10/—. Extra prime heifers, £l9 to £25/2/6. Prime heifers, £l4 to £l6 15/-. Medium heifers, £ll/15/- to £l3/10/-. Light heifers, to £lO 10/-. Extra prime cows, £lB to £22 17/6. Prime cows, £l2/10/- to £l4 10/-. Medium cows, £9/10/- to £l2. Light cows, to £9/10/-. ■ Vealers. —Best runners, to £l2 6/-. Medium to good, £7/15/- to £8 8/6. Best vealers, to £7/15/-; average, £5/18/- to £7/4/-. Large calves, to £5/5/6; medium to £4 1/-: small, down to £2/10/-. Store Cattle. —Well-bred lines • of young cattle were absent, the entry for the most part comprising cows in pen lots of mixed colours and backward in condition. One of 11 in ordinary condition, and mixed colours, sold at £5/3/6, another of 10, not so forward, £4/11/-, and one of eight heifers, mixed colours and very backward at £4/13/6. Dairy Cattle. —Best price was £l5 10/- for a good Friesian cow, but the next price was £l2. Medium cows made'from £8 to £lO, and aged and inferior £5" to £7/10/-.
