THE BRITISH IDEA
“The British Empire is actuated exclusively by an idea of individual freedom and'respect for humanity, said an important Madrid newspaper recently in the course of a remarkable tribute to the British Empire. Let us hold fast to that idea and ideal. The preservation of liberty is not only a subject for political speeches and leading articles —it is a sacred duty in the hands of every individual citizen. Keep this thought in mind when you go to the Poll on September 25. . 4 your loyalty to the idea ot liberty will be put to the test when you vote on the Licensing Referendum. The experience oi history has shown that prohibition produces calamitous results, and at the same time constitutes an unwarrantable assault on individual freedom. “That sobriety which depends upon compulsion has no value at all. It is tyranny, and is always resented tyranny”—that was the opinion of a late Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. Thoughtful New Zealanders should take care not to allow the introduction into this Dominion of an acknowledged universal failure. Prohibition would create an era of fear and repression.
