“BLACK MARKET” RAID

(Recd. 12.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 19. Breaking down the barred doors of an old cafe, Commonwealth Investigation Officers found a plant estimated to be worth fifteen thousand pounds, which they believe has been supplying an extensive black market with hair oil, and other cosmetics. The raid was carried out in an attempt to trace the leakage in Australian supplies of oil urgently needed for war purposes, including treatments at army hospitals. Stocks of some oils were allegedly found at the plant. One big business, the officers discovered,, had placed an order for two thousand pounds’ worth of goods from the organisation. Three women operatives were found on the premises, but officers so far, have been unable to establish the identity of their employer.
