PRICE OF TEA (Rec. 1.15 p.m.) a MELBOURNE, August 18. Claiming the profit on tea was too high, a grocery firm has taken out a writ to test the validity ot the Government order fixing the retail price at 2/3 per lb. The firm said the price allowed per lb profit. They satisfied with twopence profit. Ino case will be heard in the High Court. The firm claims that the Commonwealth Tea Controller threatened to prosecute it for selling tea below the fixed price. The Prime Minister announced, on July 20, a reduction in the retail tea price by 1/2 per lb. For eight months before that, tea had been sold at 3/a per lb first grade, 3/1 per lb second grade —maximum prices fixed by the Prices Commissioner in November, 1942. The Australian tea ration is two ounces a week. Between the beginning of the war in September, 1939, and November, 1942, the price of tea increased by 1/4 per lb.
