Mr T. Shaw, Rehabilitation Officer, Greymouth, has resumed duty after a lengthy illness.

Mr O’Brien, Minister of Transport, who has been visiting Greymouth, will return to Wellington, with Airs O’Brien, to-morrow morning.

Mr H. Mathieson has been appointed Secretary of the Grey District Acclimatisation Society during the absence on military service of Mr M. R. Bunt.

The appointment of Mr. James Fletcher, of Wellington, as Commissioner of Works under Section 3, Ministry of Works Act, 1943, was gazetted last evening.—P.A.

The funeral of Mrs. Ann Mary Muir took place at Karoro Cemetery yesjterday afternoon. The services at St. Andrew’s Church, Blaketown, and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. P. Kirkham.

The engagement is announced of Warrant Officer James McLean Pearson, R.N.Z.A.F., son of Mr James and the late Mrs Pearson, of Greymouth, to Betty, daughter of Mr and Mrs Palmer Ovingham, England.

Motions of condolence with the relations of the late Mr P. Blanchfield, senr., father of Councillor P. Blanchfield, and Mrs T. E. Coates, wife of Mr T. Eldon Coates, a former Mayor and Councillor, were passed at, a meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council last evening.

The death occurred suddenly at Greymouth, yesterday, of Mrs Augusta Catherine Partridge, a native of London, aged 62 years. Deceased had resided in Greymouth for the past .eight years and had previously lived in Otago. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Lilian Partridge (Greymouth) and three sons, Stanley (Greymouth), Ronald (in the Army in New Zealand), and Arthur (R.N.Z.A.F., overseas). The funeral will take place at Karoro Cemetery to-morrow morning.

Private W. T. F. Buchanan, M.M., is in New Zealand on furlough from the Middle East, and is visiting his father, Mr. J. K. Buchanan, Dunollie. He is a nephew of Mr. S. Frickleton, of Lower Hutt, who won the V.C. in the last war. Pte. Buchanan, who has also been mentioned in despatches, won his Military Medal during the Tunisian campaign, and the citation stated that throughout the night of the Takrouna attack on April 19-20, Pte. Buchanan gave first aid to many wounded. “Even after daylight, when any movement was followed by steady, well-aimed fire from enemy snipers, he carried wounded men into a cave, where they were safe from further injury. In a manner so cheerful and encouraging that it was an example and an inspiration to all, he continued to give outstanding service.”
