Miss E. Hannam left, this morning, for Wellington. Miss M .White left for ' Christchurch, this morning. Mr. W. Fraser left, this morning, on return to Christchurch. ‘ Mrs. J. Congreve left, this morning, for Wellington. Mr. L. Shrimpton left, this morning, on return to Patea. Pte. L. Ford will return this afternoon to Greymouth, after serving with the forces overseas. Mr and Mrs D. McEwen left, this morning for Ross, where they will reside. The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday of Mrs. Annie Marie Jeffries, widow of William Jeffries, of Hokitika. After celebrating her 100th birthday recently. Mrs Jane White, sister of the late Sir James Carroll, died in Napier this week after a short illness. L/Cpl. B. R. McCarthy, M.M., will arrive this afternoon on a visit to his sister, Mrs. H. Dodson. L/Cpl. McCarthy is on furlough after serving in the Middle East. Captain Peter Mclntyre, New Zealand Official War Artist, arrived in his home town for the first time in 12 years, with the Otago Contingent from the Middle-East.—P.A. The New Zealand Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) has arrived in Sydney on his way back to New Zealand. He has a number of official engagements to fulfil before he departs. The following are guests at the Albion Hotel: Messrs D. M. Evans, H. W. Mclntosh, G. Purvis, G. Bignell, E. Bugden, E. K. Whittaker (Christchurch), S. J. Conradson (Weheka). J. Ryan (Rotomanu), W. J. Lewis (Wellington). Mr. H. Chandler .(Westport) has been advised by.the Minister of Defence that his son, Warrant Officer Huon A. Chandler, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Warrant Officer Chandler is serving with the R.N.Z.A.F. overseas.
The death occurred in the Grey River Hospital, this morning, after a brief illness, of Mrs Mary Perrie, wife of Mr Walter Perrie, of Wainui Street, Dobson. Mrs Perrie, who was born at Everton, England, arrived in the Dominion seventeen years ago and had resided latterly at Dobson. Besides her husband she leaves three children. The funeral will take place at the Karoro Cemetery on Saturday.
A British Official Wireless stated that the United States Secretary for War (Mr. Stimson) was received in audience by the King at Buckingham Palace, yesterday. The King also received Air Cnief Marshal Sir Philip Joubert de la Ferte, on his appointment as Inspector General of the R.A.F., Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Bowhill on his appointment as Air Officer commanding the Transport Command, arid Air Marshal Sir Arm.,. Barratt on appointment as Air Officer commanding the Technical n aming command.
Mr and Mrs D. A. Miller left, this morning, for Timaru, where Mr Miller has accepted a position. Mr Miller, who has been the manager of the Regent Theatre, Greymouth, since 1941, was tendered a farewell last evening, members of the Regent Theatre and Opera House staffs being present with their wives. Mr E. R. Moss presided, and on behalf of the management and staff presented Mr Miller with a wristlet watch, his remarks being endorsed by Mr A. Beban. Mr M. O’Neil, formerly of Invercargill, the new manager, was welcomed.
