FRENCH LEADERS
LONDON PRESS OPINION
I RUGBY, June 14. Commenting on reports from Algiers of the new ruptures in the French National Committee, Ihe .Times” observes: “They.need not per•haps be taken too tragically. They (appear to arise partly from the real difficulties of fusion of two military organisations which hitherto had nothing in common, save rivalries and angularities, which are not less important, because they are intangible/ ‘ Discussing the attitude to be adopted to the National Committee by the United Nations. "The Times” suggests three conditions should determine it., First, that nothing be done which may seem to anticipate the eventual judgment of the great mass of French citizens. Second, that the supreme authority and freedom of action, of the joint command of the United Nations be fully maintained in all territories. where operations have been or may be undertaken. Third, that any decision relating to status of the Committee should be the joint decision of Britain, United States and Russia, ■ since experience has demonstrated the serious inconvenience which may arise from discrepancies in policy between Britain and .United States, or Britain and Russia, on issues of this kind.
VATICAN AND WAR
LONDON, June 14
Pope Pius XII. gave an address to the workers over the Swiss radio. The Pope stated: “Social revolution which promises to the workers the control of the means of production, and promises to give all power to the workers is nothing but empty words.”
The Pope also stated: “Many people say that the Pope desired the war, and that the Vatican did nothing to prevent it. When human passions have again abated, these documents which thusfar have remained secret, will be published, and they will show the Vatican’s efforts to stop the war.”
