THIRD LIBERTY LOAN
OVER £7,000,000 RAISED
WELLINGTON, June 13. The first week of the Liberty Loan campaign has produced results showing that the £35,000,000 objective is a real stimulus to an extra effort by the public. It was announced by the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) tonight that subscriptions up to Saturday totalled £7,398,465, and there were 5179 applications, 84 per cent, of which were for less than £5OO, and 16 per cent, for more than that sum.
“In the first week there were nearly three times as many applications,” stated Mr Nash, “and more than twice as much money as for the two previous loans. The money comes from all places. Auckland raised £1,500,000; Wellington is in second place, with £1,000,000; Dunedin, £350,000; Christchurch, £262,000; Invercargill, £236,000; New Plymouth, £153,000; Palmerston North, £121,000; Napier, £116,000; and Nelson, Hamilton, Timaru, Gisborne, Thames, Blenheim, Greymouth, Oamaru, and Westport, all in order. The spirit prevailing right throughout the whole of the Dominion is Inagnificent. The are that we shall get our money, but we cannot get too much. The fact that there is no extra taxation, if subscriptions come up to requirements, has impressed everyone with the necessities of our country and the wisdom and advisability of everyone putting in all they can.” Mr Nash commended what he called the extraordinarily enterprising
proposal of the Public Service Investment Society, which has agreed to lend any member of the Public Service the full amount they desire to subscribe. Those who require a safe place for their bonds or scrip can, he said, take it to the Post Office and the officials will give- a receipt for the safe custody. The trading banks do for their customers, and are thinking of the possibility of doing it for all who subscribe.
Mr Nash said that 458,000 subscribers were secured to the last Australian war loan, 185,000 coming from New South Wales and 153.000
from Victoria. “I wonder,” he added, “if New Zealand could do better than those two places put together.” BRITAIN’S SAVINGS ’RUGBY June 13. £27 452,683, the highest figure yet recorded for one week’s small savings and representing a sum of 22/2 a head, is announced to-day. This beats the previous record saved in the week ending June 5 by nearly a million, and compares with £11,474,457 of the corresponding week last year.
