RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME GALLOPING

June 19: Manawatu. June 26: Hawke’s Bay. July 3: Wellington. July 10: Wellington. July 24: S. Canterbury Hunt. . July 24 or 31: Manawatu-Rangitikei Hunt.

Trentham Appointment: Mr. A. V. O’Brien of Wellington, has been apDointed fudge’s assistant for the Winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club This was a position formerly held by the late Mr. D. J. Guiney.

Novice Jumper: Trench Law gave an impressive display at Riccarton yesterday, in a school over the pony hurdles. It was his first appearance as a lumper at the racecourse, though G. G. Shaw had given him some education in a paddock at home.

Should be improved: Prince Shad was strongly supported on the second day at Wingatui, but after showing speed which carried him to the front at the home turn he tailed over the final furlong. He should be an improved horse when next seen in public.

Lost Position: After beginning particularly well, Hippodrome lost his position going down the back in the Connolly Handicap at the Wanganui Meeting He had some ground to make up over the last three furlongs, but was fast gathering up the leaders in the straight. Another couple of strides and he would have won.

For Trentham: Platform, winner of the Dunedin Provincial Handicap is being prepared for the Wellington Winter meeting, where it is expected the customary July going will be in his favour, as he is a master of heavy track conditions. Platform is a five year-old by Night Raid from Fairform, who has left several smart gallopers.

Mud-lark: When he won. the Seatoun Hack Handicap at Trentham last July Taku Kara looked like a horse who would carry his record much further However, he was not asked to race during the Summer, and his two placings at the Auckland Meeting indicate that a winning turn should not be long in coming for he likes heavy going.

Jumper Destroyed: Raratonga, a gelding by Philamor from Spare Moment, broke a leg recently and had to be destroyed. When owned in Featherston by his breeder, Mr. D. P. Clark he was a moderate performer on the flat. Later he was sent to Auckland where he showed great improvement when converted to hurdle racing, and he was among the top-weights for the Great Northern Hurdles.

A Newcomer: While he was in Auckland. S. Barr had a new horse placed in his care, after his purchase by Mr E. G. Rutherford. This was the three-year-old, King Burn, by King Lu—-Auburn Rose, by Musketoon —Rosullus, by Lucullus from Soult Rose, a sister to Wairiki, a high-class horse early in this century. King Burn has done some racing this season without showing much form.

Fine Performances: Chat was responsible for two fine performances at Ellerslie, winning the Great Northern Steeplechase with 10.1 _ and ■running second in the _ Winter Steeplechase with 10.11. She is a born stayer and clever jumper and for her inches one of the best mares that has raced over the Ellerslie country in recent years. She has been very profitable to her owner, Mr. C. P. Thorburn, who is most enthusiastic regarding her ability, her victories including the Wellington Steeplechase in 1940, the Winter Steeplechase in 1942 and the Te Rapa and Great Northern Steeplechases this year. In the past three weeks Chat has earned £2575 in stakes.
