PATRIOTIC FUNDS

WESTLAND COUNCIL MEETING

The Mayor of Hokitika (Mr. A. R. Elcock) presided over an attendance of the following members at a meeting of the Westland Patriotic Council at Greymouth last evening: Messrs. F. A. Kitchingham, J. A. Murdoch, J. Smeaton, F. H. Denton, J. AV. Greenslade, A. B. Spiers, K. O. May. J. B. Kent. R. Kelleher, W. Green, T. E. Coates, J. Unwin, E. W. Kennedy, Mrs. F. W. Shallcrass and D. J. Evans (secretary). The financial statement showed that the receipts for April were £BB9/2/9 (including £268/12/- from the Koiterangi Committee, and £254/5/5 from the Greymouth Committee), and that the payments during that month were £1,017/0/10 (including £750 to the National Patriotic Fund Board on account of the levy). The receipts for May were shown at £1,561/9/7 (including £863/2/9 from the Greymouth Committee and £216/14/10 from the Grey County Committee), and the payments at £931/9/7 (including £5OO to the National Patriotic Fund Board on account of the levy). It was further stated that £7,088/6/5 cf the 1942-43 district levy of £13,000 had been paid by the various committees; that a balance of £6.382 remained to bo paid by the Council on the national levy; and that the banking account showed £24,800/11/- m deposits and securities and £1,525 9/2 in the current account, a total of £26,326/0/2. It was decided to nay a further £1,383 to fne Board on account of the levy.

The National Patriotic Fund Board Advised that the goods were on order lor the next 966 parcels for the Cour.J.l's district.

The Board forwarded details of wool on order for the year in monthly instalments, the Westland amounts iemg 961bs of khaki and 151bs of navy. '1 ne Board advised that 18,000 hussifls were required from the whole of Now Zealand and that the Westland, quota was 320.—The Secretary stated that more than the Quota hud been .;e.ii from Westland. The Board wrote asking the cooperation of the Council m appeals for gramophones and records and alio books for the troops overseas.—lt

The Board forwarded a proposal fur I lecture tour by Mr. Frank Clune, of The Australian Comforts Board.- — The secretary’s reply that the district committees had turned down the proposal was approved. New Zealand Breweries I'orwardea a cheque for £5O as the Westland share in the £l,OOO which the com-: oany had donated to patriotic funds, and Hannah and Co.. Hokitika forwarded a cheque for £2O. The secretary was instructed to refer to Mr. O’Brien (Minister for Transport) a request that the use of existing road services be granted for taking concert parties into the country in connection, with the United Nations Fair which is being held in the Grey district. It was stated that the ■natter had been referred to the Licensing Authority, but he had stated that permission could not be granted. Mr. Kitchingham suggested that the West Coast might give more assistance in the conduct of the Welcome Club. Christchurch. He stated that the Club gave a tea and a dance every Saturday'” evening, and a tea and a concert" every Sunday evening throughout the year. The conduct o! the entertainments was in the hand's of various organisations, but it had been found that they did not have enough organisations to carry on foi’ the full year. It was suggested that more financial assistance might be the best method of-helping the work of the club. The meeting went into committee at the request of Mr. Murdoch, but no decision was reached on his proposal.

GREY WOMEN'S BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Branch of the Patriotic Society was held on Tuesday. Present were: Mesdames F. A. Kitchingham, Herring, Reid, Mathieson, Saunders, Parfitt and the secretary. Letters of appreciation for parcels received were read. Pleasure was expressed at the news that the Patriotic parcels were reaching men serving as far away as Aberdeen in Scotland. The following shop days were allotted: July 2, Miss Britannia, July 16, Technical High School for all ciueens: July 23, Miss America. During June.-Cobden School and Cobden Convent and Greymouth Main School will conduct the shops. A large amount of knitting was sent away this month, but the quota required of mittens and scarves is far from fulfilled and an urgent work is ahead of the district and borough in order to get tile remainder of these articles away

this month. Regret was expressed I that the quota was not filled by April i 30. as requested by Headquarters. . I There is need for some easy chairs • and floor coverings necessary to make ' the lot of men doing garrison duty more comfortable.
