MIDDLE EAST CASUALTIES

MELBOURNE, May 21. Australian Imperial Force casualties in all campaigns in the Middle East totalled 18.713, the Minister of the Army (Mr. Forde) revealed today. Those killed numbered 3147, wounded 8317, and missing or prisoners of war 7249. Australian casualties in the Greece and Crete campaigns were 6219. In the final breakthrough at Alamein, when the 9th Division of the Australian Imperial Force was one of the spearheads of the Bth Army’s attack on Marshal Rommel’s forces, 5794 casualties were suffered. In the air war in the Middle East Australians won 2088 decorations, including six V.C.’s

The Minister also announced that of 17,000 men presumed to be prisoners of war in Japanese hands, the i Australian Red Cross has' now been I given the names of 5497.
