D.S.O. TO CHAPLAIN.
AUCKLAND. May 21
The Distinguished Service Order has been awarded to a New Zealand chaplain, Rev. Henry Gordon Taylor, 8.A., vicar of Kaitaia, who was reported to have been wounded, presumably in fighting before the Mareth Line. Advice of the award was received to-day by the Bishop of Auckland (Rt. Rev. W. J. Simkin). Mr. Taylor, whose mother lives in Palmerston North, was formerly a student of Auckland University College and St. John’s College, Auckland. He volunteered for service as a chaplain immediately after the outbreak of war, was accepted in the latter part of 1940, and went through the campaigns of Greece and Crete. Letters from soldiers indicated that he served almost continuously with front-line troops throughout the fighting in Libya and Tripolitania, and was highly regarded by all ranks of the units to which he was attached.
