SYDNEY WATERSIDERS
SYDNEY, April 10. The Prime Minister has ordered the cancellation of the Sydney wharf labourers’ manpower exemptions, if the 4,000 strikers do not return to work by noon on Monday. It is understood, however, that Mr Curtin has agreed to defer action until Tuesday, when the result of th.£ secret ballot of strikers will be known. The cancellation of the strikers man-power exemptions would mean that they could be called up for the Army or Civilian Construction Corps or any other work which the manpower authorities might direct. DRIVE FOR MANPOWER. SYDNEY, April 10. Australia is at present making an intensive drive for manpower. Combouts have recently been made of fashionable suburbs in metropolitan areas and women not gainfully employed, as well as men, have been ordered to report to the authorities. On Friday officials “raided” luxury restaurants in Sydney. About 300 people, mostly women, were asked for their identity cards. At least 60 per cent, of these people were ordered to attend at the Manpower Office for interviews. The squads made it clear that they were searching for women idlers as well as for men.
