RICCARTON NOTES rSPRCIAL TO "STAR.’’! CHRISTCHURCH, April 6. The handicaps for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps have enlivened interest in the Easter meeting at Riccarton to take place on Easter Monday and the following Saturday. Lore! Nuffield, who was unlucky to be beaten into third place in last year’s race, tops the list for the Great Easter, and although he has been allotted 10.4, the task is far from beyond him. He will have the benefit of a race at Washdyke, and although he is the veteran of the party, he will have to be seriously considered over the seven furlong journey. The Thompson Handicap winner, Monte Cristo, is next with 9.1, and his presence fn the field will lend much interest. One of the early favourites is Daljarrock, who has had a good record this season, and has only once been further back than fourth in his 15 starts this season. He will be ridden by L. J. Ellis, who has already been successful on him in the North Island. The Champ, who was second to Scottish Dale last year with 7.4, has 7.12 this year, while Scottish Dale, who carried 7.1 now has 7.9. The latter has not raced well since that race, but should she do her work as she is capable of doing on the day, she will again be dangerous. Poutatau has done well previously at Riccarton, and if brought south will have a big following with 8.4. Botany makes a strong appeal with 7.8, and if Tutere should be in anything like his November form, he would have the field in trouble throughout. Others in .Palora, Fur Coat, Gayest Son, TheolatOral, Dinah Dhu and Lord Advocate are all worthy of discussion. Royal Lancer stands out alone on the top of the Great Autumn Handicap list, his 10.3 being 231 b above the next All Night and The Joker. This sounds a big weight, but Royal Lancer is a class well above the field, and right on the day, will take a power of beating. He will be ridden by A. E. Ellis, so that there will not be the usual necessity of this horse carrying a burdensome load of lead. All Night has been highly assessed, and as he has done little if any solid work, he can be dismissed in the meantime. Foxola is an interesting entrant, and other Ndrth Islanders include Gayest Son, Lambourn and Daljarrock, who are expected to make the trip south. The Joker has not had any racing for some time, and will probably require some before he gets back to his Spring and Summer form. Recent winners in Strip and Arctic Dawn are definite possibilities, the latter especially appearing to have bright prospects. There is certain to be a big thinning out when the first acceptance is taken for both events, but nevertheless the fields should be the strongest assembled at Riccarton at Easier for some years past. The four-year-old filly Lucky Girl by Myosotis from Sunny Brook has been sold by Messrs F. and G. Nelson to Mr J. Bradley, of Timaru. She was recently purchased by the Messrs Nelson after winning her first and only race last month, .the buyers having her on lease with the right of purchase at 100 guineas. The price they received was 400 guineas plus two contingencies of £5O each. Lucky Girl is a solidly-built filly, and was not tried until this season. She is now being trained by A. Stove, who has the two-year-old Kiloney in work also for Mr Bradley. The ancient Erination still puts plenty of vim into his schooling, and will make his presence felt at the Riverton Easter meeting. He will be accompanied south by Visibility, a former Gisborne gelding by Kincardine owned by Messrs Hunter and Webb. He is built on big lines, and shapes well over country. Dr. Fitzgerald, of Oarnaru, has leased from Mr K. Austin a yearling filly by Defaulter from Folk Lore, by Dark Legend from the Wallace mare Susie Pye, who traces, back to Radium, sire of Night Raid. Desert Love, owned by Dr. Brown, of Methven, has been given to R. Brodie to train. By Nightmarch from Merry Jost, she showed promising form at times last year, but her efforts were confined to minor placings. WESTPORT ~NOM INATIONS
