KUMARA NOTES

Driver R. H. May is spending leave with his parents. Mrs. S. Hammersley left this morning for Dunedin. Mr. W. Lawrence is a patient in the Westland Hospital having jarred his loot while at work in the bush at the Blackwater Mill. An enjoyable ball was held last night under the auspices of the Red Cross Association. The Mayfair orchestra supplied the music. Mrs. Hammersley and partner won the prize in the Monte Carlo dance. The State School Committee met on Wednesday evening. Present: John Reedy (chairman), F. Rudkin, B. Becker, R. Chant and H. Hamer (hon. secretary). The headmaster (Mr. L. J. Thwaites) reported a roll number of 70, average attendance 63. Visitors to the school during the month were •Nurse Stewart (schools nurse) and Messrs Saunders and McCutcheon ako Nurse Berry in connection with matters affecting the dental clinic. The Internal Marketing Department, had again commenced the supply of apples for the children. The Board advised confirming the appointment of Aliss Rollo as assistant mistress.. The chairman reported having made enquiries for the old concrete blocks at the site of the old dairy factory for use in the construction of lhe proposed swimming bath. Also the site selected for same.

There were five applications for the position of caretaker at the school and Mrs. V. Clark was appointed. In reply to a question the secretary .stated he had had no reply from the P.W. Dept, if they had any shovels, grubbers or picks which the committee could purchase. The chairman referred to the death of Air. Ridley, late Agricultural Instructor and moved a motion of condolence with his relations. This was carried in silence. The headmaster stated that of late the attendance had been much more satisfactory and members expressed pleasure that the co-operation of parents in this matter was manliest. Accounts amounting to £2/19/6 were passed.
