KILLED ON WHARF AUCKLAND, March 16. A wharf labourer was killed instantly on the Auckland wharf about 6.15 this morning when he was struck by a gangway, which slipped while he was operating a hoist. He was James Taylor Hamilton, of Orakei, married, with three children. Hamilton was seated on a hoist which was supporting the gangway in the middle. One end of the gangway was against the side of a ship and the other was supported by a prop. The gangway slipped and struck Hamilton on the head.
MINER KILLED
INVERCARGILL, March 16
After surviving for more than three hours under a fall of coal at the Birchwood mine at Ohai to-day, John Dahren, a miner, collapsed and died immediately after being extricated. He was married, aged about 55, and had a family of four children. The fall occurred when Dahren was working at a face. He was completely buried by coal, but the rescue party was able to maintain conversation with him Although the coal was removed as quickly as possible, it was 5.30 o’clock by the time he was brought out. He was obviously weak alter his experience, and he collapsed and died almost as soon as he was freed.
