HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

HOKITIKA, March 16. . The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor (Mr. A. R. Elcock) presided over the following: Crs. T. W. Duff, C. Caliari, D. P. Stuart, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, K. Arthur, W. H. Stopforth. The Treasurer’s statement showed receipts £922/3/9, expenditure £lO3B/4/11. Accounts amounting to £B2O/12/6 were passed for payment. Abbatoirs Report: Stock slaughtered for month of February amounted to 31 cows, 16 heifers, 54 bullocks, 261 sheep, 60 lambs, 17 pigs, 5 calves. Condemned: 1 cow, 1 bullock and 1 pig Fees collected for month amounted to £B6/19/1 as compared with £9l/2/3 for the corresponding month last year. The Foreman’s and Sexton s reports were read and approved. The Sexton’s application for annual leave was granted. . It was decided to erect notices at the cemetery regarding the depositing of rubbish. Reconditioning and sealing of footpaths in Gibson’s Quay at railway crossing was referred to Works Committee. , ~ , „ The Deputy Mayor moved that a letter be sent to the Beautifying Association congratulating the members on their work on the section m front of the swimming baths in WelU Street. —Carried. It was decided to notify carriers that gravel dumps must be deposited only at certain places as defined by the Council. CORRESPONDENCE The Secretary of the Hokitika Fire Board wrote asking the Council to appoint a representative on the HOKitika Fire Board, in the place of the late Mr J. J. Mclntosh. —Cr. T. W. Duff was appointed. The Town Clerk, in the Hokitika Milk Vendors’ Scheme, 1943, wrote asking tne Council to appoint two representatives to the Committee. Cis. Heinz and Stopforth appointed. Mr R E. Norriss, Livingstone Street, applied for permission to _mstal a septic tank.—Granted, subject to usual conditions. Mr P. J. Brown, Park Street, applied for permission to instal a septic tank—Granted, subject to usual conditions. „ , Mr E. J. Shuker, Sewell Street, wrote, pointing out (1) that the open drain in front of his residence is a menace to young children, and (2) asking to have the footpath along his frontage gravelled. —Referred to Works Committee. Mr E. G. Oliver, hon. secretary oi Methodist Trust Board, wrote asking that the open drain along the frontage of the Methodist Church m Sewell Street be filled in, as there have been several minor accidents there through people slipping in the drain when coming out of church at night, and asking that the open drain on the Tancred Street side of the premises be cleaned out to give adequate drainage from the paddock.—Referred to Works Committee. The Hon. Secretary of the Methodist Trust Board applied for relief from paying part rates on portion of the Methodist property which is occupied by the Jubilee tennis courts and stating that in normal conditions the whole of the income received from the Club is paid to the Council in rates, but now under war conditions the Club is practically defunct and is now without any means of income.—Deferred. John Cameron applied to surrender Lease No. 2294 Municipal Reserve 471, Sewell Street, on the grounds that the reserve is useless for grazing or any other purpose.—Accepted. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote drawing attention to the cracks appearing in the base of the foundations of the statue of the late Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon, and of the possible consequences through fros'Z getting into the cracks and endangering the safety of the statue.—Reierred to Works Committee. The Chairman of the West Coast Rehabilitation Conference wrote advising that the conference had agreed to levy the local bodies for a total amount of £25/10/- for payment of incidental expenses, and that the Hokitika Borough’s proportion on a population basis was £2/10/-. — Passed for payment. The District Agent, Social Security Department, Hokitika, wrote, advising that in regard to Scheme 13, authority had been given for the extension of the scheme in respect of the five men employed by the Council for a further period of 13 weeks from March 29, 1943. Members of the Michel family wrote, expressing thanks to the . Council for its message of sympathy in their bereavement.

F. Groufsky wrote, asking for supply of gravel.—Referred to Overseer. A. Penman, Gibson Quay, wrote, asking for spoil to assist in making of street lawns. —Referred to Overseer.

E. W. Heenan wrote regarding goodwill tour to Westport on Sunday, April 4, by rail-car. Sisters of Mercy, St. Columbkille’s Convent, wrote asking for exemption from rates of part of property formerly a private residence. —Referred to Clerk for report.

J. Hutchinson and five others wrote asking for a street light at the corner of Stafford and Livingstone Streets.— Request granted, and decided to shift light at Evans’ to corner of Hoffman and Stafford Streets, Crs. Stuart and Heinz to report on the necessity for a light at the intersection of Stafford and Jollie Streets.

Trustees of Church of England Social Hall wrote, asking terms for tar-sealing in front of hall and church. —Referred to Works Committee.

Mrs C. Dwan, Stafford Street, wrote asking terms for tar-sealing crossing in front of dwelling in Stafford Street.—Council unable to attend to private sealings this year owing to its own programme. * J. Connor, Revell Street, asked for permission to erect a building behind next section on the beach.—Permission granted subject to building being behind own freehold. Mr Wells, Gibson’s Quay and Rol-j leston Street, asked for piping of drain.—Works Committee to report. The Chairman of the District High School Committee asked for the tarsealing of tennis courts while tarsealing work was being carried out in the vicinity.—Borough to lend the plant to the Committee.

S. Clark and six others wrote, pretesting against Mental Hospital patients wandering in the streets without supervision.
