The Ankara radio reports that General Inonu was unanimously reelected President of Turkey.—B.O.W. Mr. T. O. Bishop, of Wellington, a member of the Coal Mines Council, is visiting Greymouth on official business.

Mrs. H. E. McClelland, Shakespeare Street, left for Wellington, this morning, on an extended holiday.

The death took place at the Vicarage, Levin, yesterday, of Rev. Canon Arthur William Payne, late Warden of St. John’s College, Auckland. He was aged 81. —P.A.

A resident for Nelson for 64 years, Mr. Samuel Gorman died on Saturday at the age of 90 years. He had given a total of £30,000 to Methodist mission work, mainly in the Solomon Islands and partly to Home Missions.

Mr. R. Bowman, who is retiring from the position of publisher of the “Grey River Argus,” was yesterday tendered a farewell, when the manager, Mr. N. V. Lovell, presented him with a chromium plated smoker’s companion. Mr. M. Daly and other members of the staff added their good wishes.

The death took place at her residence at Westport this morning of Mrs J. Comerford, widow of Mr John Comerford, who died a year ago. She was a native of Kumara, aged 57 years, being a member of the Murphy family, and is survived by one daughter, Mrs S. Stewart (Westport) and six sons, Leo and Joseph (overseas), John and Edward (in camp), James (Christchurch) and Noel (Westport).

Mrs. T. Lawn, formerly a resident of Greymouth, who now resides in Wellington with a daughter, Mrs. R. Caigou, to-day celebrated her 87th birthday. Mrs. Lawn, who resided on the West Coast for about 60 years, was prominently associated with the Methodist Church and conveyed greetings on the occasion of the recent jubilee of St. Paul’s Church. She has a family of five sons and two daughters. The following are guests at the Albion Hotel:—Flying Officer J. Allison, Mrs. J. Allison, Messrs W. A. Maddox (Nelson), A. Prenderville (Nightcaps), Miss E. Laurence (New Plymouth), Mrs. H. Breeze, Miss M. C. Breeze (Ruatapu), Miss C. Matheson, Messrs H. M. Wakefield, C. H.‘ Hardy, E. Smellie, R. T. Gordon (Christchurch), P. J. O’Connor (Hokitika), M. L. Thomas (Wellington), D. Simmon (Westport) and E. A. England (Ashburton).

The death occurred in Greymouth, this morning, of Mr. George William Mintrom, in his 83rd year. A native of St. Helier, Channel Islands, he came to the Dominion 70 years ago, residing at Christchurch. Over 40 years ago he came to the Coast, living first at Hokitika and for the last 37 years at Greymouth. For 30 years he was employed on the Greymouth wharf, retiring nine years ago. His wife predeceased him four years ago; He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. M. Whiting and Mrs. T. W. Wilson (Wellington) and Mrs. W. Tones (Greymouth). The funeral will take place at the Karoro Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.

The death took place at Invercargill, last night, of Mr. H. McCorkindale, formerly a resident of Greymouth, in his 60th year. Mr. McCorkindale, who had been in ill-health for some time, came to Greymouth in April, 1930, as Workshops Foreman in the Railways Department, and held that position till June, 1939, when he returned to Hillside, whence he originally came to the Coast. He entered the Railway Service at Hillside, as an apprentice, and served the greater part of the time there, retiring a few months after his transfer from Greymouth. Mr. McCorkindale was an active member of the Greymouth and Karoro Bowling Clubs. Besides his widow, he leaves one son, Wilfred, who is overseas.
