FAMOUS PICTURES

LOW PRICES AT AUCTION

Burne-Jones’s huge canvas, “Love and the Pilgrim,” which realised 5,500 guineas in 1898. was sold for 20 guineas at Christie's (wrote A. C. R. Carter in the London “Daily felegranh”) on September 21. The sale was that of the late Sir Jeremiah Colman’s collection. The late owner gave 200 guineas for the picture nine years ago. I recall well the scene 44 years ago when Sir William Agnew exclaimed: “A mighty lucky bid!” after the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland had beaten all comers at 5.500gn5. The octogenarian dealer, Mr. Nathan Mitchell, was the winner yesterday. He told me that he had come prepared to meet ardent opposition, and' was therefore surprised at his success. This was renewed when he had to give only 90gns. for the world-famous picture of “Hope,” by G. F. Watts, R.A. It depicts a blindfolded girl with a lyre, seated on the top of the globe. I saw this bring l,soogns. in 1913.
