WATERSIDER SENTENCED
AUCKLAND, August 18. On a charge of st&aling a 1. lb. packet of tea valued at 4/4, the property of the Union Steam Ship Company, Thomas Joseph Harris, aged 55, a watersider, was sentenced to two weeks’ imprisonment. He pleaded nou guilty, denying he handled any tea while working on a ship early on Friday morning. The Magistrate (Mr. Morling, said he accepted a constable’s evidence that ne saw Harris Slace a packet of tea on a ledge on le unlighted side of the ship and later saw him put the packet under his coat. When approached by the
constable he threw the tea into the water, saying: “My word is as good as yours.” The packet was recovered from the harbour and the police discovered later that a carton of tea had been broached. ENEMY ALIEN CONVICTED WELLINGTON, August 18. An enemy alien, Louis Stephen Doczi, a motor engineer, was convicted by Mr Stilwell, S.M., on a charge of travelling from Christchurch to Wellington without a permit, and was sentenced to three months’ hard labour. On a further charge of using the name, “F. Steven,” he elected to be tried by a jury.
