BOMBER OFFENSIVE
AMERICANS TAKE PART OVER OCCUPIED FRANCE (Rec. 12.15) RUGBY, August 17. American Army Air Force bombers were over enemy occupied France late this afternoon. They were escorted to their target and throughout the operations by a fighter force of R.A.F., Dominion, and Allied squadrons in addition to fighter squadrons of the American Army Air Force. All the bombers returned safely. Reports received at Istanbul from Vienna state that United States Flying Fortresses made a recent highlevel daylight attack on the important industrial centre of Wiener-Neu-stadt, near Vienna. During the following two days Vienna had five alerts, but no bombs were dropped. The Germans have recently transferred many war factories from the Ruhr to Wiener-Neustadt. OVER ENGLAND LONDON, August 17. It is officially stated that this afternoon a few enemy aircraft fiew over the coast and South-west England. Bombs were dropped at two places, causing some damage and a small number of casualties, some fatal. ~ , , , Over Britain last night bombs were dropped at scattered points m the Midlands. Little damage was done, and no one was hurt. No enemy activity over Britain had been reported on Saturday. Spitfires of the Fighter Command, how-' ever, continued their attacks on railway communications in occupied France. Flying at tree-top height along the railway from Rouen to Etaples, British aircraft damaged a number of goods trains. Other Spitfires attacked vessels moored in a canal near Ouistreham. One aircraft is missing. During Saturday an .American fighter squadron accompanied Canadian fighters in a sweep over France, and took part in sorties .and convoyprotection work. This is the fourth time in six weeks that the United States airmen have been in action with the Royal Air Force.
NEW RAID SHELTERS
LONDON, August 17. Nine new deep shelters in London with a capacity for 70,000 have now been completed, after 18 months, work, reports the “Daily Express. Few people apart from officials know their whereabouts or even of their existence. Most of the new shelters are entered from tube stations. Tney will be opened if raiding is again heavy. A small number of enemy aircraft last night dropped bombs at scattered points in the North Midlands. No casualties were reported and there was little damage.
