Mr. E. P. Stratford leaves for Christchurch this evening.

Sergeant Dave Kirk, D.C.M., son of Mrs. W. Kirk, of Blackball, has received his commission. He is serving with the Middle East Forces.

The appointment of Mr. Sze Zau Tsung as extra Consul of China at Wellington was gazetted last night.— (P.A.)

Mr. H. W. Buckingham, of Napier, who has been appointed Inspector of Permanent Way in the Railways Department at Greymouth, will arrive to-morrow to take up his new duties.

Mr. R. E. Pugh, of the Railways Department’s train examining staff in Greymouth, has received advice of his transfer to Morrinsville.

Mr. K. J. MacKinnon, of the staff of the Mines Department, Greymouth, has left on transfer to the State scheelite mines at Glenorchy.

Mr. J. Gilbert, of the Post and Telegraph Department’s mail room staff at Greymouth, has been appointed. to the lines staff. He will be succeeded by Mr. L. M. Tredinnick, of Westport.

A London cablegram stated that the Duke and Duchess of Kent have decided their youngest child shall be known as Prince Michael, and not as Prince George, which they originally intended.

The funeral of Mr. Edward John Hallinan took place at Karoro Cemetery this afternoon. Requiem Mass was celebrated at Brunner this morning, by Rev. Father Holohan, who also conducted the service at the graveside.

Flight-Sergeant R. F. (“Mick”) Stone, of Te Aroha, who was reported missing in a recent casualty list, is well-known in the Grey district. He worked in the Blackball Mine for two years, and was also engaged in the dredging industry. He was a member of the Ngahere League Club.

The following appointments and promotions of officers off the New Zealand military forces were gazetted last night:—Lieut.-Colonel J. G. Jeffrey, M.C., V.D., A.D.C., is appointed a fortress commander in the South Island, in addition to his appointment as an area commander, and is granted the temporary rank of Colonel. Major R. Sinel, Reserve of Officers, New Zealand Artillery, is promoted to Temporary Lieut.-Colonel, and is appointed Directdr of Mechanical Transport, Army’ Headquarters, vice Major' (Temp. Lieut.-Colonel, V. J. Innes, who is attached to the branch of Quartermaster-General, Army Headquarters. Captain S. C. Hay is appointed Deputy Assistant AdjutantGeneral, Northern Military District, and is granted the temporary rank of Major while so employed. Major E. F. Laws, of the Second N.Z.E.F., is appointed Deputy Assistant Quarter-master-General, Central Military District. Major F. R. Mcßride, Second N.Z.E.F., is appointed Deputy ■ Assistant Adjutant-General, Central Military District.—P.A.
