GOODS TRANSPORT CONTROL

GREYMOUTH COMMITTEE

The Greymouth Goods Transport Control Commitee has been appointed as follows: —Messrs G. D. Smart, J. M. Eadie, J. Corcoran, J. S. Robertson, J. W. Greenhill (Greymouth), F. L. Harris.on (Christchurch), and W. Vallance (R°t° manu )- The district over which the Committee will operate will include the Grey County, and all boroughs and town districts therein.

In a list of directions from the Commissioner of Transport, the Commitee has been advised that some of its duties are as follow:—To prepare a schedule showing by sizes the estimated tyre requirements month by month from August to January next, for the vehicles under their control; to keep in close touch with the manpower position in the district, and advise the Commissioner when they consider the efficiency of the carrying business is being seriously impaired by inadequate ’ man power; and make arrangements for the Chairman or a member of the Committee to be nominated as the Road Transport representative on the Petrol Advisory Committee. It is pointed out that as soon as the Committee has been appointed it is illegal for any carrier to operate except subject to any general or special direction given by the Committee. As it will take some time to work out its proposals it may be necessary for the Committee to make a general direction authorising carriers to carry on as usual, pending further directions from the Committee. It is further stated in the list of directions that “the main avenue for the saving of petrol and tyres appears to lie in trucks moving only when carrying maximum loads. This can only be done if arrangements are made so that Committees or their agents have full knowledge of all orders for transport coming in from 'a certain district (both inwards and outwards), so that full loadings can be arranged, as far as is reasonably possible.- This may mean interference with the business of individual carriers, but it is emphasised that individual interests must be put aside if national welfare is to be properly safeguarded.”
