Miss Betty Stewart, of Kumara, has commenced duties as shorthandtypist,; at the Railways Department office, Greymouth.

Mr J. D. Murray (Labour) was returned unopposed in the by-election for the Spennymoor Division of Durham, where the Labour M.P., Mr J. Batey, had resigned.—B.O.W.

The death is announced of Mr. Thomas William Lewis, of Christchurch, chairman of directors of the Kaiapoi . Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd. Mr. Lewis was born in Lyttelton in 1872.

Mr. D. S. Kennedy, Engineer to the Greymouth Harbour Board, who recently met with an accident, was able to leave hospital this afternoon. It is not expected, however, that he will resume duty foi' some time. .

A London cablegram stated that Lieutenant W. E. Bowes, the England and Yorkshire fast bowler, who was reported missing in the Middle East, has now been reported as a German prisoner..

Miss M. C. Hickson, Wellington, who has been appointed Acting-Dis-trict Manager for the A.M.P. Society, replacing Mr. B. J. Miller, who enters training camp shortly, arrived yesterday.

Mr. J. H. Twentyman, Organising Secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society for Canterbury and Westland, who has been visiting Greymouth, returned to Christchurch last night.

Mr. J. Connor, storeman of the Railway Department at Greymouth, has received notice of his transfer to Dunedin, and will leave shortly to take up his new appointment. His successor will be Mr. F. C. Dyett, of Lyttelton.

The death occurred suddenly on Sunday of Constable T. M. Condon, gaoler attached to the Nelson Police Station. Constable Condon, who was 58 years of age, leaves a widow, one daughter, and two sons, one of whom is Constable P. Condon, of Westport.
