WOMEN’S SERVICE. WELLINGTON, July 17
“The response to an urgent national call to women suitable for service in the armed forces has not been nearly as good as it should,” said Hon. VI. J. Broadfoqt to-night. “Ido not believe that this is due to indifference or apathy among the thousands of women concerned, but rather to a lack of appreciation of the urgency, of the need. It cannot be emphasised'too strongly that an appeal was not made before it was due. The plain stark truth is that New Zealand’s share in the great war effort will require the recruiting of many thousands of women this year for various duties with the Navy, Army, and Air FoA'e. I feel confident that as soon as women appreciate the urgency of this national appeal, they will not shirk their bounden duty.” WELLINGTON TRAMS. WELLINGTON, July 17. Stating that the black-out of street lighting in Wellington has. “made it utterly impossible to maintain the existing schedules, and at the same time, accept responsibility for safety of the travelling public,” the Wellington Tramwaymen’s Union has decided to run the tramcars at a reduced speed at night, until the conditions are improved. * The Mavor, Mr. 1. C. A. Hislop, a~ Chairman ‘of the Tramways Committee, said he realised that the existing black-out. conditions . rendered, driving more trying and difficult 10l the tramway motormen. All that was required, in such conditions, was that consistent with the safety of the public, which was the paramount consideration, every effort should be made to mtaintain the timetable. Mr. Hislop added that he had received no request from the representatives of men to discuss the matter, but he was ready to do so. In an endeavour to obtain some relaxation of the black-out of the Wellington streets, the Mayor saw the Defence authorities this week. He was not successful. He intends to discuss the matter with them again next week.
