NOTES ON THE RACING

[SPECIAL TO “star.”]

DUNEDIN. June 20

The Otago Hurdles was won by an outsider in Phalanx, who went to the front after the first fence and led for the remainder of the journey. He was followed into the back stretch by Noko, Donadea, and Valantua, with King’s Toast and Inquisitor in last place, and he had a useful leaa entering the straight from Heidelberg, Merry Simon, Donadea, Noko, and Bow Street. Heidelberg put in some good work in the run home, but had no chance of getting up to Phalanx, who finished with something in hand. Merry Simon was a creditable third, two lengths in front of Bow Street, with Distress Signal, Noko, and Donadea following at intervals. Inquisitor and King’s Toast were well back.

Slayer was sent out win favourite for the Otago Steeplechase, but was a beaten horse a long way from home. Ballybrit and Anglo French disputed the lead from the early stages and with half the journey covered were some 12 lengths in front of Gay Boa, with Slayer and Valens in the rear. Ballybrit drew away from Anglo-French rounding the home turn, and led to the last fence a length in front. Anglo French dipped on landing and lost his rider, and Ballybrit then appeared to be in for a comfortable win, but inside the last furlong Gay Boa and Prince Flaneur ran up to him, and one of the best finishes to a cross-country event seen on tnc course for some years ensued. Ballybrit siill held his place a chain from the post, but Prince Flaneur got up in the last stride to gain a neck verdict. Gay Boa was a close Jhird, and there'was then a gap to Slayer and Hunting Chorus. Cherokee led throughout the Birthday Handicap, and had in impressive win. She was followed over the first half mile by Doubleack, Fidelis, Vaicron, Auctor, Maggiore, and Tissue, and she led into the back stretch from Doubleack, Fidelis, .Auctor, Vaicron, Maggiore, and Tissue. There was not much change into the straight, and Cherokee did not give any indication of conceding ground in the run home. Fidelis finished very fast on the fence, and got up to gain second money from the Greymouth-owned Maggiore, who, badly placed turning for home, did good work over the last quarter. Doubleack was two lengths back, in front of Dark Olga, Auctor and Tissue. , .

Fleet Street led from start to finish in the Winter Handicap, and accounted for the downfall of a staunch, favourite in Bashful Lady. He was followed into the straight by Strip and Bashful Lady, Symbol and St. Cloud, and although the favourite reduced the gap a little, she had no chance of overhauling the speedy leader. Waitoru fought out the finish with Bashful Lady, and two lengths away Symbol headed Nightcalm. Synthetic, St. Cloud and Bebel Mate.
