Private I. Ferguson arrived last evening on leave from camp.

Mr. and Mrs. L. Newport left this morning, on return to Opunake, after visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. McSherry.

Leading Aircraftmen G. Fairhall, T. Fiveash, and W. Brown left last evening on return to their Air Force Stations.

Mr. Alfred Williams, of London, a member of the Mildmay world-wide evangelistic movement, will arrive this afternoon, from Christchurch, and will be the guest of Rev. F. G., and Mrs. Reddell.

A London cablegram announced the impending retirement of Sir Horace Wilson, Permanent Secretary to the Treasury and head of the Civil Service. He is to be replaced by Sir Richard Hopkins, who is the Second Secretary to the Treasury. Sir Horace went to Munich in 1938 with the late Prime Minister (Mr. Chamberlain) as adviser to the Government.

A cablegram stated that Queen Wilhelmina arrived in Ottawa by air from Great Britain on Thursday. It was her first flight. She was welcomed by the Canadian Prime Minister (Mr. Mackenzie King), and she will be the guest o'f the Governor-General (the Earl of Athlone). Queen Wilhelmina was also greeted by Princess Juliana, whom she had not seen for two years. Later, Queen Wilhelmina will go to Washington, where she will visit the President and Mrs. Roosevelt.

The following appointments to West Coast schools were confirmed at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday:—Ahaura, Mrs. F. E. Shortt; Blackball, Mr. M. P. Lyng; Greymouth, Miss N. S. Jarvis: Hatters, Miss E. Donnellan; Hokitika D.H.S.. Mrs C. M. Undrill; Kumara Junction, Miss D. J. Hamer; Otira, Mr. W. H. Henderson; Roa, Miss M. M. Wareing; Totara Flat, Miss M. D. Gilbert. The following resignations were confirmed:—Miss E. W. Rowlands (Hari Hari), Miss M. McMahon (Ngahere); Miss D. J. Hamer (Runanga).
