DEPORTATIONS TO GERMANY "LONDON, June 17. From Warsaw comes news of 1000 Poles having been taken to an “unknown destination,” which is probably Germany, as that is what happened when 5000 Poles were rounded up a few weeks ago. In the House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary (Mr. R. A. Eden) said that the British Government had been informed of the crimes committed by Germany against Poland. He reiterated the Prime Minister’s statement that retribution for such crimes must henceforward take its place among the major purposes of the war. MANY OFFICERS ARRESTED. RUGBY, June 18. News received from Poland, today, by Polish Government circles in London, indicates that since the attack on Heydrich, the German authorities have carried out special measures of “self protection" in Poland and Czechoslovakia. A special assistant to Governor-General Frank, in security matters in Poland, has been appointed. He is the notorious S.S. Commander Krueger. His first step was to arrest all Polish officers of the reserve, numbering oyer 10,000. At the same time, 3500 Polish officers were arrested on Polish territory incorporated into the Reich. Of these, many were shot as enemies of Germany. Krueger is reported to be raining down death sentences on Poles all over the country. HEYDRICH’S KILLERS SHOT? (Recd. 1.40 p.m.) LONDON, June■ 18 ; The Prague radio announced that Heydrich’s assailants were discovered to-day and shot, while resisting arrest They were Czech nationals, dropped from a British plane. Several accomplices were arrested. BOMB IN FRENCH COURT (Recd. 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, June 18. According to the Berlin radio, the Public Prosecutor at Dijon was severely injured when a parcel, handed to him during a Court sitting, exploded. HOLD ON NORWEGIANS. (Rec. 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, June 18. A Stockholm report says tne Germans are closing two more gaps in their “anti-escape” net around Norway. A prohibited zone has been proclaimed along Norway’s northernmost frontier with Sweden, w-.nle stricter measures are being introduced for controlling sea traffic in Norway’s extreme north. “Social Demokraten” reports that hundreds of Norwegians from Finmark escaped to Russia by sea and land. Five hundred are reported to be fighting with the Red Army on the Arctic front. A message from Oslo reports that as a reprisal for the outbreak of chalked pavement propaganda, favouring King Haakon, the Quislings have ordered 30 Sarpsborg citizens to clean and scrub the main street.
GERMAN PRECAUTIONS LONDON, June 18. The Germans have ordered the evacuation of the civil population from Dieppe to Boulogne, according to reports from the French frontier. A Stockholm report says that the ponulations of several Belgian coastal districts are also evacuating. The evacuation is stated to be to prevent civilians assisting Anglo-American landings, Commando or otherwise.
