COLONIAL SUGAR COMPANY
SUPPLY POSITION SOUND
SYDNEY, June 4
•■The position regarding . refined sugar supplies is now sound," said the chairman (Mr. E. R. Knox) at the annual meeting of the Colonial Sugar Refinery Company. ‘‘All orders for some time past have been executed promptly, and a considerable reserve has been built up. The demand for refined products is growing, and has been considerably accentuated by abnormal buying by householders laying in stocks. During; the Summer of this year more than 50,000 tons of refined sugar were supplied in excess of deliveries in the previous Summer." Mr. Knox said the Australian output last year was about 721.000 tons compared with 783,000 tons in the previous year. Reasons for the decrease were the Queensland Government's decision to discourage the manufacture of excess sugar, the effect on the crop of unfavourable weather, the labour shortage, and restricted supplies of fertilisers.
