TREASON IN S. AFRICA

SECRET ARMY FORMED

JOHANNESBURG, June 3. A secret army was formed early last year to overtnrow the Union Government. according to the prosecution at the opening of a trial in which 48 men, including 17 police, were accused of treason. They were to be members of the Osscwabrandwag organisations storm troop section, which drilled militarily. The organisation was alleged to have established factories for the manufacture of grenades and bombs, and to have contacted enemy agents in Laurence Marques, hoping to secure arms. The men were also stated to have had possession of documents. plans, and shipping information valuable to the enemy, and to have helped internees to escape, and received instruction in sabotage.
